Learn: move the hands
Reading the hands
The short, dark hand shows the hour and the long, orange hand shows the minutes. Each number on the clock face is worth five minutes for the long hand — when it points at 3 it is 15 minutes past, at 6 it is 30 minutes past (half past), and at 9 it is 45 minutes past (quarter to the next hour).
About the Clock Reading Practice
Kids Clock Practice helps children learn to read an analogue clock. There are levels for o'clock, half hours, quarter hours, five-minute steps and any minute, plus a Learn mode where the child moves the hour and minute hands to see how the time changes.
Reading a clock requires understanding two hands: the short hour hand and the long minute hand. Each minute mark is worth one minute and each number is worth five. Start with o'clock, then half past, quarter past and quarter to, and finally five-minute intervals. The Learn mode lets children experiment, which builds understanding before testing.
